09/15 BanG Dream! Yume∞Mita (2026) - 3.5/5

Viola was a serial killer who bragged about killing people.
Yuno uses ChatGPT.
Miyako is gay.
Ritsu is a fatass.
Nonoka is cute.
Arale-tan I love you!!!!!

The music for this show was awesome!!! Maybe it's because I'm not too into vtubers but I didn't really get the impression that the show was mostly about it even thouogh it was a big part of the concept of the band, probably because I wasn't following the actual vtubing sessions done by the band members while the show was airing.

The plot with Viola didn't really go much but perhaps the way it proceeded can be said to be the proper response to people like her...? I really like Viola's acting though she's so evil!!!!!

I forgot what half of the plot was honestly but the music is just way too good. Arale's voice is just way too good!!!!!!

夢はパワー!!!

Anyways I've been busy lately since I just started university, but I think I'll be posting more here as the seasonal shows I'm watching are ending.

Brining the scoring system back to out of 5 since out of 3 certainly proved to be too limited for rating stuff. Ideally, I would not even care about things like ratings and focus solely on the merit and issues of a show, as well as what I personally enjoyed, but having a metric like this makes it easier to easily compress how much I liked or thought something was good, according to my own subjective values at the time of scoring.

GAMES

08/18 Chaos;Head NoAH (2009) - 3/5
"Is the scenery your eyes perceive truly real"

After two years of having started this game, I've finally gotten around to completing it. Chaos;Head NoAH is the first game of the Science Adventure series, most famous for its second mainline game, Steins;Gate.

The game can be described as a story made out of a series of thought experiments, embedded unto the setting of early 2000s Shibuya and Japanese Internet Culture. The thought experiments being mainly surrounding ideas about delusions, electric waves, particle physics, human senses, and skepticism.

I believe much of one's enjoyment of this game would come from how much one likes the main character, Nishijou Takumi. Nishijou Takumi is a stereotypical "kimo-ota", and while I personally enjoyed him as a character, I found it quite hard to makes sense of the way in which other character's attitudes towards him had developed, especially towards the (main) ending around Chapter 10, and even the ways his own attitude changes at all. For this reason, I happen to enjoy some routes over others, and over the main ending.

Anyways though, the game is still very interesting with much of its exploration on the ideas I have talked about earlier. To me, these ideas were the most interesting parts of this game, outside of being entertained by Takumi's literally me actions and whatnot. Unfortunately though, I let the game marinate long enough that most of these ideas were made mundane to me, hence reducing the impact of the game to my experience.

So lesson learned, please don't be like me, who always seem to take breaks in playing games when near completion, otherwise you might just miss out on what makes these games most enjoyable in the first place.

07/23 BanG Dream! Ave Mujica - The Die is Cast (2025) - 3/3

From the Bandori series, focusing on the members of Ave Mujica and MyGO to a lesser extent.

First, the music. The music from both Ave Mujica and MyGO are good. I'm not too good at my technical music knowledge so I'll just say that they are headbangers. I also like the performance they do before the music. The world in which they try to immerse the audience in is very interesting. Whilst it is not something that literally happens in the world, "Uika"s performance on one of the later episodes in which she narrates her backstory was truly amazing.

As for the story and the characters, well honestly it's quite a mess! There's sooo much drama in it! This makes it compelling, but also somewhat tiring to watch. It's certainly not as pure hearted as something like what you get in MyGO, but the emotions here are still very strong and sincere. I also had a lot of fun watching Mutsumi and Mortis. I'm not sure what's going to happen with Sakiko's family though.

Mortis say no if you are the cutest girl ever!

Anyways that's two Bandori anime done. I'm glad to have known these girls, if I want to get more into it I might consider watching the original three seasons.

Also, reminder that the new Fields Medalist Yu Deng is an Ave Mujica fan, having a Sakiko and Uika standee on his desk, as well as having the Ave Mujica "Ether" album cover art as his Google Scholar profile.

Learned of this from @jilanzhijing on twitter.
07/18 BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! (2023) - 3/3

It's MyGO!!!!! is a part of the Bandori series about a band of girls who are 'lost' or maigo in Japanese, but will nevertheless keep going forward and having their "go" (or turn).

I haven't watched or seen anything else from Bandori, so I think I missed a lot of references, but the story itself was self contained, so I could enjoy it just fine. The 3D animation was really nice to look at, and the music which was of course the spotlight, was also really nice, particularly the voice of the vocalist and lyricist Takamatsu Tomori and the guitar of Kaname Raana who's freedom in playing the guitar and overall way of life was really interesting from watching the anime. I don't know much about band music so I can't say much in terms of quality, but well I liked the characters a lot and the performances were very moving given the context the show puts them in.

After this, I'm thinking of watching checking out Ave Mujica, which serves as a sequel to this show, or atleast that this show serves to give a lot of context for. I want more girls band series, though I'm not sure about fully stepping into the world of idol anime in general.

07/14 Tomb Raider King (2016) - 1/3

I spent four days reading this thing from start to finish and it is very much garbage. It's valuable in how it lets me keep attention on something, and I have to wonder how to apply such steady attention to actually reading books I want to read.

Tomb Raider King is a story that is centered around relics, artifacts/ tools/beings that we know through historical or mythological stories, similar to how some things in the TYPE MOON universe works I suppose albeit employed in a much more vague and simplistic manner (not claiming that they got it from type moon, it's a common thing in these type of stories which borrows a lot from history and human culture a lot anyways), and the users of these relics. Our protagonist starts off by getting killed along with most of his teammates in a Tomb (a place designed to choose worthy owners for relics, though this tomb is a bit different) after being betrayed by his boss, only to get sent back in time by a mysterious crow, in which he uses his future knowledge to get very strong and change the course of events and essentially prevent the dystopian world order he would have found himself in the future. It's basically your typical fantasy revenge slop manhwa with an antihero protagonist.

The story is VERY repetitive. I enjoyed the character interactions, there were some interesting moments with interesting enough usage of relics and stuff, and it does give you a bunch of stuff on tales, lore, folklore, and mythologies around the world, albeit favoring certain regions more than others. But the story and writing is just bad. Maybe fun, if it didn't drag things out so much. The early chapters I like more than the later chapters, and there are lots of loose ends in the story.

It's not good at all. I wouldn't recommend anyone to waste their time on this. But it is a way to waste one's time easily. It's made to be easy to read.

07/20 The End Sky

Today is a special day to Subahibi/Tsui no Sora fans. It marks the end of the time in which the stories takes place, and today is 15 years after the world was supposed to have ended, as predicted by Mamiya Takuji, the Saviour.

I'd usually prefer to make art or some crafts to celebrate this day, but this year it seems I have neglected to do so once again. Hence, I shall celebrate it by featuring some of the art I have made more than 2 years ago by now.

Well then, since the world hadn't ended yet as far as we're concerned, let us celebrate the story itself by doing our best to Live Happily! Until next time!

07/03 Short Dreams during Sickness some stuff on Imagination

Kinda sick today. For the past three to four hours I was sleeping earlier, I was having a somewhat intense dream with carnal properties. In other words, I was making out heavily with some arbitrary person, who I repeatedly would lick and fondle with my tongue certain parts of the head again and again.

What is interesting about this dream, which I can say for most of my dreams, is the abstraction of people. This arbitrary person is truly arbitrary and not me simply trying to hide something I am hiding the identity of, or at least that is how it appears in my recollection of it. Of course, it is possible that I am hiding it from my self, but in any case it seems in dreams I am almost always dreaming of arbitrary or abstractions of things.

I don't know when it started, but it seems I have such a strong resistance in involving people in my dreams and my imaginations, but lately I have been actively being a bit more lax with my self, even allowing the undressing of people, though of course still unassociated with any desire to be acted upon in reality, since that is still a no go for me. I think it is just healthy to be as precise as possible with what one forbids one self to do, if one wishes to actually keep such reasonable restrictions in the first place.

06/24 Vinland Saga Season 2 (2023) - 3/3

Well, the whole show is pretty amazing and self explanatory on why so. Season 2 mostly covers the Slave Arc, in which Thorfinn undergoes a transformative journey after having lost his whole purpose of living for the past 12 years or so after the end of Season 1. Makoto Yukimura apparently initially planned the series to be about slavery before being persuaded by his editor against it, instead getting him started as a viking, so it can be said that Season 2 is where the story really begins in terms of what Yukimura had initially envisioned, where Season 1 was a long, but very good prelude to the whole thing.

06/22 氷の城壁 [Koori no Jouheki] (2026) - 3/3

Despite being from the same author, this anime was somewhat different from Seihantai which was much more straightforward. The themes are still generally the same though, exploring friendship and romance and coming of age, but the main relationships are just much more restrained, the characters much more introspective. There's also much more drama, whilst Seihantai barely had any real drama except for certain things that are too wholesome to even call as such.

The story is definitely a slow burn. At the start, many of the characters are either having a mistaken impression of others, are actively hiding some parts of them, or have just not learned some things that they later would. It can be said that the story takes its time to first heal its characters first and to correct their understanding of each other, before getting them to enjoy more intimate relationships.

It's definitely nice to watch after something like Seihantai which is just too sweet and too cute that you might find yourself intoxicated by it. Otherwise, Seihantai could be a nice show to watch after something like this, as a reward of the long journey you took to understand the author's ways of thinking in order to just jump in to what is concluded to be a happy place to be in.

06/18 正反対な君と僕 [Seihantai na Kimi to Boku] (2026) - 3/3

I kept seeing this even though I missed out on watching this last season, but this was a very cute show. The setting is very 2020s and suggests to us how things may be in the highschool setting at Japan these days. It is interesting in comparison to other notable romcoms in this manner, most of which being set in 2000s and 2010s. Also, unlike other romcoms, this one focuses more on the dating part rather than the buildup to confession which we see so commonly across other highschool romcoms.

The characters are very kind people, or are actively being shaped by the kindness and positivity around them. They look like stereotypical DQNs which may be shunned upon by typical otaku MCs and such, but well this time it is mostly them who are the leads, and they're all nice people. The main heroine Suzuki Miyu is especially cute. And ofc, the concept of the show is of polar opposites, so the male mc Tani Yuusuke, and some other characters are not really like the most 'DQN' looking people. As I said, it is mostly focused on the dating aspect, and it's nice to see how these people are able to maintain their relationships with each other in manners that I cannot imagine for myself happening. Such are the good qualities of simplistic and straightforward and kind ways of living. And I called Tani the male mc, but honestly the show tries to focus on a lot of characters beyond the first couple so it's perhaps more correct to call him one of the male MCs.

Tani and Suzuki taking a picture on the picture booth in one of their dates

Oh, the opening is pretty creative too! I like it. It certainly captures this era, making it look really fun even though I personally dislke this era more than I like it. BTW, a detail I like which my brother pointed out is how you can see the Tani's glasses curving the light slightly, but this seems to be inconsistently applied unfortunately.

My favorite part in the opening. It's better when synced with the music.
The glasses detail I was talking about.

Anyways, it is just a very innocent, positive, lighthearted romance, but with enough introspective depth, mostly provided by certian characters, when exploring many adoloscent questions on romance and friendships and social groups. Overall, it's just a pretty nice, decent, show. The positivity and lightheartedness would be something I can compare to shows like Skip to Loafer. I might check out the manga to read ahead for a bit.

06/17 Re:Zero Season 4 First Cour (2026) - 1/3

This season is coming to an end, and Re:Zero's first cour ended today! It's one of the few shows I'm watching this season, and since it just ended, I'd like to give my take of it here. I wonder if I should make a specific section for live comments or chapter/season based comments on shows though. Anyways, back to the main topic.

The anime was pretty decent I guess? It's been a while since I last watched Re:Zero. I don't think I like this adaptation very much. I certainly didn't like it as much as I liked season 2, but I did read the WN for Arc 6, and didn't for arc 4, so maybe it's just some sort of bias I have for having to compare my experience back then with the adaptation. I even decently liked Season 3, even though it was the Arc I liked least when I read it, but I didn't seem to enjoy this first half much at all.

There were some interesting parts, but overall I found myself just not taking most of it seriously. Maybe it's a problem on my part, and maybe in part of the community that keeps making horirble jokes that are souring the points that would have been impactful, or maybe the pscyhological aspect is just much better in text than in an anime adaptation where you lose so much of the descriptive narrations that makes it much easier to get into the characters' experiences. Or maybe I'm just getting "too old" for Re:Zero, but well that sounds like a horrible explanation so I don't really like that way of putting it.

In any case, I just didn't like it too much. Maybe I'll change my mind when I come back and rewatch it once the second cour is complete. It is after all, just getting started.

06/10 平家物語 [Heike Monogatari] (2021) - 3/3

祇園精舎の鐘の聲、諸行無常の響き有り。
The sound of the Gion Shōja bells echoes the impermanence of all things
Biwa, the observer and biwa-hoshi of the tale

Technically, I started watching it 11 PM yesterday, but finished it today at almost 4 AM. I think it was very much worth risking my typical sleep schedule to go further late, as I managed to witness the whole story in one sitting, which wasn't only a very approvable experience, but also one that furthered my appreciation of the classical eastern traditions I have been learning about lately.

I have never read the original epic even in translation, however this adaptation still manages to convey an amazing story with heavy themes around (Pure Land) Buddhism and the Samurai, in a way that was rather easy to follow (although I have seen many complaints on this having been incomprehensible to a lot of viewers..?) and enjoy. All of the characters are distinct, although for some reason people found them hard to distinguish...? Even though they had pretty unique features and character traits... although similar names as the story was centered on a few clans.

In any case, I find the english reception of this to be rather strange. But the opinions of others shouldn't deter one from properly enjoying something, and I found this animated tale to be very rich and interesting, as much as it is tragic and unnerving.

06/08 トップをねらえ2!Diebuster (2004) -3/3

It's amazing how much this anime can fit in 6 episodes! I watched the original Gunbuster and this just to have the right to watch this show's opening specifically, but it turned out to be such a moving story, that I have to wonder why it's not as popular as it's own opening in modern times compared to other shows from this era.

This show was very beautiful in terms of visuals and music, and had very solid characters with rememberable design and interesting, distinct personalities. Despite the short time they had, the story was able to develop these characters and helped them feel much more close than what GunBuster could, with its time dilation gimmicks (which of course meant to show how much the protagonists were isolated as heroes of the story).

Lal'c and Nono from Episode 1

As with the original 1988 Gunbuster, this show had some nice erotic elements too, but it shines with the way those elements are used for much more. The human heart is I think a pretty important symbol in this show. I'm sure there was something like that in the first show too, but they made it much clearer in this one.

Boobs and short scenes from last episode
Noriko!!

I would say that watching the original 1988 Gunbuster first is key to appreciating this show to the fullest, although not necessary. I would probably recommend the original 1988 Gunbuster just in order to watch this show. Conversely, if you watched only the original, then I would highly recommend watching this show, as it builds on the original quite a lot whilst remaining fresh and solid on its own. In any case, I definitely recommend it to those who just wants to watch something short but brimming with life, or those who just wants to see cute robot boobs.

Fun Fact: Dr. Stanley Love, a NASA astronaut and lead CAPCOM for the recent Artemis II mission, has an itasha featuring Nono from this show. I heard of this today, and was the reason I remembered to watch this show in the first place.

06/01 トップをねらえ!Gunbuster (1988) - 2/3

Short and narratively simple. Maybe a bit too short. Nice nudity that felt very natural, in the unnatural setting at least.

MANGA

06/23 氷の城壁 [Koori no Jouheki] (2026) - 3/3

I share my thoughts here with what I have written down on the anime section. One thing I've noticed on this author though is how much the third year seems to be almost totally skipped through.

Also, the last two chapters I couldn't find an English translation of, so I had to go through the trouble of reading it raw and using the assistance of some image text extractors to use my Yomitan on some kanji I forgot or didn't learn of yet. I also barely even tried to read the last chapter, chapter 117, because of this issue. It seems that translations are being released en masse as of late though so it probably shouldn't take too long for it to be completely translated.

06/18 正反対な君と僕 [Seihantai na Kimi to Boku] (2022) - 3/3

I ended up reading the manga for this on the same day! Since it was only 65 chapters, it was pretty easy to complete. The story was also light enough for me to read. Overall, I think it is a very decent high school romcom. It kinda passes through the third year fast, but I suppose it is justifiable given how busy everyone gets at that year, although it definitely could have used more content there. But again, this series doesn't really waste time on drama at all, which is perhaps one of its appeals.

Overall, a very wholesome series, and a nice late 2010s-2020s romcom. It fills up a spot without really competing with any classics, and just does its own thing sincerely. I really like how this wasn't dragged out at all. Apparently, the other anime from a manga of the same author as this show airing this season, Koori no Jouheki, shows the fem mc trio (Suzuki, Sato, Nabe), probably in their youth since that manga predated this one, but to know for sure I guess I'll just have to check it out for myself.

I just like this panel from Chapter 64 so I'm placing this here

MUSIC

06/13 铁花飞 [Tie Hua Fei] (2026) Mili - 3/3

Link to the Youtube release with captions.

Apparently, this song is a theme for Ch'en the Dawnstreak. I don't know much about her or even just Ch'en in general, though I'd been interested in properly getting into Arknights for a few years now, but if I even should, it is a pretty long gacha game that requires a certain degree of commitment after all. I've always loved the character art and voice acting, and sometimes the game's music and character themes as well. For this song specifically, I've been listening to it on repeat for a while now since I first listened to it two days ago. I especially like the Chinese chorus:

在这一刻,我的心平静如水
At this moment, my heart is tranquil as water
没有谁能迫我退悔
No one dares compel me to back down
四面楚歌,这颗心无惧无畏
Besieged on all sides, this heart knows neither fear nor dread
铁花飞,飘逸不残灰
Iron sparks flicker, ethereal yet never reduced to ash

千年之后还剩下什么?
What remains after a thousand years?
灵魂的重量又怎能取舍
What measure can weigh a soul's worth?
有共存才有未来可说
Only coexistence yields a future worth speaking of
不一定牵着手
Not necessarily hand in hand
但一定永远向前走
But we shall forever journey onward

正确了又能证明什么?
What proof lies in being correct?
就算能从过去找出差错
Even if past mistakes can be uncovered
身世境遇不由人选择
Birth and circumstance are beyond our choosing
有理解就足够
Mutual understanding is more than sufficient
盼日夜细水长流
May our days and nights flow like a steady stream

I also tried listening to some of it with Japanese lyrics, and it had a much different feel to it when I tried to sing it out, which is one of the things I appreciate with being exposed to different languages. Linguistic diversity (even using conlangs) with Music is one of the main things I love about Mili.

06/28 My 19th Birthday

Today is my 19th birthday! I am not sure what to think of it. I am happy to be young enough to still be receiving gifts from relatives at least. I am kinda sad that I am growing older, but attachment to age will always cause bad stuff more than good stuff anyways.

This shall be the last of my teen years, and it will also be the year I would enter university as a student! There are lots of things to happen in the future, but I hope to just keep dealing with stuff immediately ahead of me instead of getting distracted with what I could do and where the things I'm doing could lead. Obviously, there's some value in thinking about the future, but for my case it seems to be too excessive at times, and I shall only use it to set guidelelines so that I am free to do what I am ought to do in the present.

Anyways that's it. I'm hoping to get some new stuff for my birthday, like a handheld device like Steam Deck or ROG Ally X, or a more expensive book that I haven't bought because I have barely finished any of the books I've bought even if I have gone through some parts of them. Maybe some time, I would have enough resources of my own to host my own parties for my friend.

06/13 Anime Convention and Japanese Play

Today I went to a Contemporary Cinderella play of the local Japanese Drama Society and to the local anime convention happening on the same day as well.

The Cinderella play was modernized to the taste of a western otaku/weeb performers, and I liked it since I was a part of the target demographic, although I wonder what the local Japanese folks who go here think since so many of the references are clearly for the younger audience. I wouldn't think this way of doing things is something to criticize though, after all these young performers, most of which are not even raised with Japanese, are all doing their best to make an interesting play in a country far away from Japan. Unfortunately I forgot the record some of the earlier parts, and I only got to record the musical scenes even though there were lots of interesting moments in the play beyond these musicals. I don't know if I want to connect this too much to my IRL or just not care about it, and the files I have recorded of it are quite large, so I'll probably refrain from posting pictures and videos of it here.

After the play, my friend and I subsequently went to a local anime convention that was happening on the same day. The convention was just as usual. The sellers and artists are mostly the same, the cosplayers are the same people although they tended to have some varieties in their cosplays. The lolita community was also quite strongly represented, and of course wore elegant outfits and accessories. As for me, I was really interested in buying the Robot: Super Color Comic translated volums a collector was selling, the cover art of which was drawn by Range Murata, and contains a variety of artists within who drew mangas or illustrations, but I refrained from it since I think it's a type of thing one should be collecting and I think that if I were to collect stuff it would be the japanese versions or ones that are more centered around the art of one or a few artists. Of course there are still some books of this style I would be interested in, but anyways I had to think a bit more carefully about how I'm spending stuff, which is a taboo for collectors but I have learned my lesson since I have been hoarding a bunch of books I don't even feel too interested in, so I'd rather think hard about what it is I actually want to collect. Therer were also a bunch of magazines that were interesting though.

Volume 1 of Robot: Super Color Comic

Instead, I bought an Oshino Shinobu figurine, which I added to my small collection of Shaft and Nisio Isin characters. Some of my favorite details include the strap softly falling off her shoulders, keeping her one piece from falling apart as she pushes her arms together, and the details of her skirt. I am not yet a proper collector of figurines, but for something around the price of 60 CAD, and I have looked it up and saw it to actually be typically sold for cheaper by around half of that, I think it is of a pretty good quality.

06/05 Ontological Causation and Ibn Sina's God

According to certain classical western traditions, most thing's existences requires that thing's constituents. Whilst the mere sum of its parts do not make up the whole, they are still a necessity for its existence. A book needs its medium and its form, and maybe its contents in order to exist. X is a cause for Y because X is necessary for Y to exist, but not necessarily that X comes temporally before Y.

I heard that Ibn Sina derived the concept of a Single Being that is the root cause of the universe, as a logical conclusion of the chain of causation requiring a cause that is not caused by anything else. A being with no constituents, and thus does not rely upon anything. A being that exist necessarily. A being that causes the universe as a property of its existence. This being is what he believed to be the Abrahamic God. This God is eternal, just as the universe that it creates is, as virtue of being free from time and space, and yet everything emanates from it.

This is only a gross oversimplification of what his argument, and the concept of causation discussed in classical western philosophy may actually be. I've only heard of it as I'm still not a diligent enough reader of primary texts or even log textual commentaries. Perhaps I shall take some notes on what I've heard to be Ibn Sina's lifestyle.

06/05 Neocities domain was down earlier today

It seemed like it was mostly a mistake on Namecheap's side, but as a result, sites under the neocities domain were down for a while. I'm not sure whether something like this would happen again, but I do think it's a good reminder that I should eventually host my site on my own VPS.

06/03 Notes and Second Brains

Notes and Records are meant to be discovered multiple times, as opposed to having a permanent stay in one's mind or forever left behind. If you make them yourself, then they are useful resources, that contain knowledge you once knew, and anchored to experiences you once had.

Second Brain is a nonsense term, as your second brain cannot think for itself. If it can, then it wouldn't be your brain. But things that fall under this category are nice systems for keeping notes and records.

I personally prefer long form notes over short atomic ones that is prescribed in the Zettelkasten system. Long form notes allow you to accidentally reencounter old notes, whilst Zettelkasten seems to be designed for intentional use. For intentional resource gathering, I would rather use external resources instead

06/03 Embrace Forgetting

Forgetting is an important part of learning. It frees up your mind for other things.

Instead of holding unto and lamenting fleeting thoughts, accept this process and allow yourself more opportunities for knowledge, insight, and skill instead. That way, thoughts that return may reveal themselves to be far richer than how they once were.

Have faith in the process of remembering. It is where you learn the most.
